SBK – Advanced LASIK

SBK, or Sub-Bowman’s Keratomileusis is an advanced form of LASIK, and is a procedure performed by some of the country’s most progressive ophthalmologists.

How is SBK-Advanced LASIK different from LASIK? SBK uses all-laser technology with femtosecond laser, instead of a microkeratome or mechanical blade.  All laser technology using the femto is more precise and customized to each eye.

Are you a candidate for SBK?

  • Desire to reduce your dependency on contacts and glasses
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Have a stable prescription for two years

At Durrie Vision, each candidate goes through thorough diagnostic testing and meets with a surgeon to discuss candidacy, expected outcomes and risks.

The decision to have a vision correction procedure is an important one that only you can make. Serious complications with SBK are extremely rare, but like any surgical procedure, it does have some risks. Many of the risks and complications associated with this procedure can be reduced or eliminated through careful patient selection and thorough pre-operative testing using the latest diagnostic technology.

After a thorough eye exam, you and the doctor will determine if SBK is an option for you. If you are a good candidate, you will be given additional information about the procedure that will allow you to make an informed decision about whether to proceed.

The Day of Surgery – What to Expect

Once you have scheduled your surgery, you should plan to be at our surgery center for about 90 minutes. You will need a driver to take you home. An anesthetic eye drop is used to numb the eye and an eyelid holder is placed between your eyelids to keep you from blinking during the procedure.

Using the femtosecond laser, the surgeon prepares the cornea for treatment.  Then, the excimer laser reshapes the cornea.   The entire process under the laser is usually less than 60 seconds.

Post Operative Care

Our post-operative technicians will advise you about the eye drops you should use and how often. You will be given a kit with the drops and instructions as well as eye shields to wear at night for the first week. A post-op visit is scheduled for the following day with a doctor. You may experience some discomfort for the next 12 to 24 hours, but it is usually alleviated with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
