PRK, Photorefractive Keratectomy, was the first procedure performed using the Excimer laser. Like LASIK, it corrects vision by reshaping the cornea. Instead of using a laser to prepare the cornea for treatment, PRK is performed by removing the epithelium (outer skin of the cornea) and the laser is applied to the surface of the cornea. PRK is a very effective procedure as an alternative to LASIK.
PRK is for those who:
The area around your eyes will be cleaned and a sterile drape may be applied around your eye. Anesthetic eye drops will be used to numb your eyes; no injections or needles will be used. When your eye is completely numb, an eyelid holder will be used to keep you from blinking during the procedure.
Next, the doctor will remove the epithelium, the thin layer of protective skin that covers the cornea. You will be asked to look directly at a target light while the laser reshapes your cornea. The laser will be programmed with the information gathered in your pre-operative exam. The laser treatment will be completed in less than a minute or two, depending on the amount of correction needed. Once the cornea has been reshaped, the area will be “bandaged” with special contact lenses that will assist the eye in healing the epithelium.
Our post-op technicians will advise you on drops and medications after your surgery. PRK has a longer recovery time than LASIK, with some discomfort 24-48 hours after surgery. Typically, most patients see improved visual recovery within 3-5 days post operatively.
