Our History
Focus on Independence is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization that provides free laser or surgical vision correction to disabled individuals who are unable to use their arms or hands to handle eyeglasses or contact lenses.
The program was born during a moment of clarity in 2003. Dr. Daniel Durrie (of Durrie Vision) watched Christopher Reeve deliver a televised speech. The actor, who was paralyzed at the time, wore glasses, which his wife had to position on his face.
As a vision correction specialist, Dr. Durrie was inspired to take action. He created Focus on Independence as a way to use his skills to give back to the community and help individuals suffering from paralysis regain some of their independence.
To date, approximately 40 people have benefited from the program.
Our Mission
To increase the independence of people with spinal cord injuries by reducing their need for glasses and contact lenses through vision correction surgery.
Our Future
Focus on Independence is in the critical launch stage of its development. Our current goal is to raise the necessary capital to produce support materials and training programs for interested vision correction surgeons around the country who wish to participate in the program. We will also create and implement a promotional and public relations plan to create awareness among those who suffer from spinal cord injuries.
