OVERLAND PARK, KS (July 10, 2008) - Jason E. Stahl, MD of Durrie Vision implanted the first Crystalens HD approved by the FDA this month. The Crystalens accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) was first approved by the FDA in November 2003. The Crystalens HD is the fourth generation of the only FDA approved accommodating lens.
Refractive lens exchange, where the natural lens is removed from the eye and replaced with a synthetic lens because of early cataract, has been in practice for decades. The replacement lenses are normally single focus lenses, allowing the patient to see either near or far but still requiring vision correction with glasses. The Cystalens HD accommodating lens has been shaped to enhance the depth of focus, improving near vision without compromising intermediate or distance vision.
"The Crystalens HD is a great option for patients with cataracts or beginning cataracts that want both distance and near vision without glasses," says Stahl, who specializes in refractive lens exchange surgery.
