Stahl Named Associate Editor

Jason Stahl, MD, has been named associate editor of The Journal of Refractive Surgery. The associate editor plays a significant role in the Journal by determining whether a manuscript is accepted for publication and ensuring its final quality. Distributed nine times each year, The Journal of Refractive Surgery is the official peer-reviewed publication of the International Society of Refractive Surgery of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. It provides a forum for original research, review and evaluation of refractive and corneal surgical procedures, as well as lens-based refractive surgery. A subscription to the journal is a member benefit of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, and it therefore has a substantial readership.
Durrie Presents at Asia Cornea Society

Daniel S. Durrie, MD, appeared at the Asia Cornea Society meeting in Singapore this month. He spoke before an international audience concerning the 12 month visual results of Sub-Bowman’s Keratomileusis (SBK) versus Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK). Durrie reported that both methods of laser refractive surgery appear to be safe and effective in correcting myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
Durrie Speaks at Singapore National Eye Centre 18th Anniversary International Meeting

Daniel S. Durrie, MD, presented at the Singapore National Eye Centre Anniversary Meeting this month. His topic was the Acufocus corneal implant, which is used to treat presbyopia, and which has been in clinical trials in the United States, including those at Durrie Vision. To date, the clinical trial results suggest that the Acufocus inlay is an effective method of treating presbyopia.

Durrie Presents CK Template

Daniel S. Durrie, MD, spoke to a large audience at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Chicago this month. Durrie explained a template recently developed for use in performing Conductive Keratoplasty, a procedure to treat presbyopia. The template was designed to assist surgeons in making the treatment spots, composed of radio waves, evenly and consistently spaced around the periphery of the cornea.
Sub-Bowman’s Keratomileusis (SBK) and Surface Ablation Compared

Daniel S. Durrie, MD, presented results of a study comparing Sub-Bowman’s Keratomileusis (SBK) and Surface Ablation at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting in Chicago. SBK uses a laser to make a flap that is lifted for laser treatment and then replaced. Surface Ablation removes the epithelium manually and then the laser treatment is applied. Durrie told the international audience that both SBK and surface ablation continue to appear to be equally safe and effective methods of laser vision correction.
Durrie Reveals Results of Femto-second Laser Comparison

Daniel S. Durrie, MD, presented results of a study performed at Durrie Vision Research entitled “Prospective Randomized Comparison of Fellow Eyes Having LASIK Using the Ziemer Femto LDV Laser or the Intralase FS Laser to Create the Flap.” Durrie reported that both the Ziemer and the Intralase lasers appear to create excellent quality flaps for LASIK procedures. Flaps were studied for quality, thickness and ease of creation.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) can provide a "four-in-one procedure" to patients of the baby boomer generation. RLE is an outpatient procedure that removes the natural lens and replaces it with a premium accomodating lens. Jason Stahl, MD, ophthalmologist at Durrie Vision, was senior instructor of an instructional course as well as a skills transfer course at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in New Orleans. Stahl, along with Michael Knorz, MD, of Germany, taught other ophthalmologists the basics of how conventional and laser microkeratomes work and what one needs to know before performing LASIK surgery. Stahl has been an instructor in this class at American Academy of Ophthalmology meetings since 2002.

SBK vs. PRK Research Presented at National Conference

Daniel S. Durrie, MD presented a paper at the recent American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in New Orleans. The paper was titled “Sub-Bowman’s Keratomileusis vs. PRK: 1 year visual results.” Durrie reported on the results on a prospective, randomized study in which 50 patients underwent SBK in one eye and PRK in the other. The results showed that both SBK and PRK provide safe, effective and stable results. The SBK eyes showed better visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and patient preference during the early postoperative period.

His presentation was titled “Biomechanical and Wavefront Results in a Contralateral Study Comparing Sub-Bowman’s Keratomileusis and Surface Ablation.” Ophthalmology experts who review and discuss the papers at each session of the meeting vote for the best paper. Best papers of all the sessions are presented on the final day of the meeting.

Boghossian Poster Covered in EyeWorld

EyeWorld, the journal of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), did a story on a poster presented by Allen Boghossian, DO, refractive/corneal fellow at Durrie Vision in Overland Park, Kansas. The poster, titled “Corneal Biomechanical Properties and Intraocular Pressure after LASIK and PRK” was presented at the recent annual ASCRS meeting in San Diego. Dr. Boghossian’s poster demonstrated that there was not a statistically significant difference in the change in viscous dampening and cornea rigidity measured by the Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA, Reichert, Depew, N.Y.) after sub-Bowman’s keratomileusis (SBK) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Daniel S. Durrie, MD, was one of five surgeons taking part in a round table discussion recently convened by Ocular Surgery News on the rising use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. Richard Linstrom, MD, moderated the discussion, which also included Johnny Gayton, MD, Terrence O’Brien, MD, and William Trattler, MD. Part one of the discussion is covered in the April 1, 2007 of Ocular Surgery News, and part two will be in the April 15 issue. Dr. Durrie is the Refractive Surgery Section Editor of Ocular Surgery News.

Overland Park-Based Durrie Vision to Lead U.S. Clinical Trial Procedure for Aging Eyes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a U.S. Clinical Trial to test the effectiveness of the AcuFocus ACI 7000 Inlay. The inlay is intended to improve near vision in patients with presbyopia (“aging eyes”) for reading without glasses. The first procedures in the United States will be performed at Durrie Vision in Overland Park.

FDA Approves New Lens Implant Technology for Patients With Extreme Nearsightedness

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced its approval of a patented lens that is surgically implanted to reduce or eliminate myopia (nearsightedness) in adults.
