Anime or Circle contact lenses have hit the US attracting young females seeking the “anime” look, the disproportionately big eye look of anime art and comics. The somewhat creepy big eyed look is achieved with oversized contact lenses illegally purchased over the internet from Japan. The lenses, available both in prescription or non-prescription (plano) are so large they cover part of the whites of the eyes.

Cosmetic or plano lenses have been illegal in the United States since 2005 when federal law classified all contact lenses as medical devices and restricted their distribution to licensed eye care professionals. The American Academy of Ophthalmology would like to alert consumers to the hazards of buying any decorative lenses, including circle lenses. In a press release from the Academy, they caution that inflammation and pain can occur from improperly fitted over-the-counter lenses and lead to more serious problems including corneal abrasions and blinding infections.

To protect your eyes, all contact lenses must be fitted by an eye care professional.

The news hit the internet yesterday that scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed an app for smart phones that can give a person an accurate eyeglass prescription. The app is loaded on the smart phone and used with an inexpensive, thin lens and works like an old manual focus camera where the user brings patterns into focus. The app measures each axis of the eye and even can detect astigmatism. Once all the patterns are brought into focus by the user, the app produces a prescription. The app, named Near-Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment (NETRA) will be introduced soon.

Does this replace your trip to the eye doctor? No, because your doctor is looking not only at what your prescription is for clear vision, but your eye health, medical history and any sign of eye disease such as cataract or macular degeneration. And the app can’t do that. But it may have a significant impact worldwide for people that don’t have access to high quality ophthalmic care, but do have access to cell phones. According to the internet article by Discovery News, MIT is working with various NGOs in different countries to help distribute the both the app and the screen, which will be known as PerfectSight.

Our doctors are big proponents of a healthy lifestyle to reduce the chances of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and counsel patients on eating a diet high in anti-oxidants. A recent study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical school supports this and reports a combination of B6, B12, and folic acid help protect women’s eyesight as they age. During the 7 year study of more than 5,000 women ages 40 and up (with pre-existing cardiovascular disease or risk factors), one group received supplements daily while a control group received a placebo. The supplement group had a 34 percent lower rate of age-related macular degeneration which causes vision loss in older adults. According to the National Institutes of Health, eat a diet rich in leafy green vegetables and fish, maintain a healthy weight, and don’t smoke to reduce your risk of AMD.

On Sunday, May 2,2010 The New York Times ran a front page article about Latisse titled, “Long Lashes Without Prescription, but with Risks.” The article talked about how Latisse is being dispensed, sometimes without seeing a doctor, and even online without a prescription. It is true that many plastic surgeons, dermatologists and medspas are dispensing Latisse without an eye exam. . But, as the article states, at least a medical doctor can talk to the patients about proper usage and risks of the drug. Online sales are prohibited by Allergan, the maker of Latisse, and the FDA approved its use as a lash enhancer with the restriction that it is a prescribed drug, because of possible use and potential side effects. Latisse is the same formula as Lumigan, a glaucoma eyedrop, which reduces eye pressure. While any physician can prescribe Latisse, they can’t take care of an eye problem if one should arise. At Durrie Vision, we consult with each patient, check their eye health and follow up in eight weeks to make sure there is no change in eye pressure or side effects. Dr. Andrew G. Iwach, executive director of the Glaucoma Center of San Francisco, was quoted in the article saying, “When it’s something as personal, something so critical as vision, you don’t want to cut corners.”

A new trade publication, Premier Surgeon, has identified 250 ophthalmic surgeons as leaders and innovators in the field of premium IOL implants in refractive lens exchange. We are proud to announce that three of the doctors are from Durrie Vision! Dr. Durrie for his refractive surgery research and development, Dr.Jason Stahl for his expertise with lens exchange and Dr. Erin Durrie Stahl for her work in pediatric ophthalmology. Premium IOLs replace the natural crystalline lens in the eye, much like cataract surgery, however these lenses allow the patient to see at variable distances. These are perfect for the active Baby Boomer who is experiencing presbyopia and the beginning stages of cataract. New developments in lens implant surgery making it easier on the patient and more precise for the surgeon are in research right now. Stay tuned to our BLOG for announcements – our surgeons will be leading the way!
